NEW YORK, NY June 21, 2016 — New York Surf Soccer Club is pleased to welcome Kim Wyant as member of the NY Surf Coaching Leadership and member of the NY Surf Board of Directors. Wyant is currently the head coach of the NYU Men’s Soccer Team — the first and only woman to lead a men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer program. Previously, Wyant served as head coach of the Women’s Soccer Teams at Florida Atlantic University and Dowling College, as well as head coach of the New York Athletic Club Women’s Soccer Team, leading the team to the 2014 United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) Amateur Women’s National Championship.

Wyant was the first goalkeeper for the United States women’s national soccer team. She has played 16 international games as the U.S. Goalkeeper, and is forever in the soccer history books of U.S. Soccer for appearing as the first U.S. goalkeeper (1985) and recording the first ever shutout, and first ever win (July 1986 vs Canada). In 2008, Kim was given the ‘Special Recognition Award’ by the National Soccer Hall of Fame honoring her contribution to the winning way of the Women’s National Team.

In 1998 Wyant served as a FIFA Staff Coach in Trinidad, where she instructed National team coaches from the CONCACAF region on the modern demands of goalkeeping. Kim is widely regarded as one of the top goalkeeper coaches in the U.S.

“NY Surf is honored and excited to have Kim join our club as a member of our coaching leadership and a member of our Board of Directors. Our goal continues to be to assemble the finest coaching leadership and staff in the New York metro region. Adding Kim, who is soccer legend and an all-around amazing person, is another key step to achieving this goal as we expand across the metro New York region,” commented Matt Popoli, New York Surf SC President.

“I am very excited to be joining NY Surf and am confident that we will provide the best coaching and technical development environment in the New York area. We expect that our teams will play at the highest levels and we will bring the same quality of soccer to the New York metro region as San Diego Surf has brought to Southern California,” said Wyant.

In 1982, Wyant appeared in the first NCAA National Soccer Championship as a scholarship member from the University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights women’s team and was named the Most Valuable Player of the National Championship tournament.

Following her successful college career, Wyant went on to star for the Long Island Lady Riders, becoming the Lady Riders all-time leader in minutes played, and leading the team to the United Soccer Leagues (USL) W-League National Championships in 1995 and 1997 and an improbable 2-0 victory over the Brazilian Women’s National Team in 1999. Wyant holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Diploma and a USSF “B” license.
