In their first big test of the Summer 2017 season, NY Surf hosted the New England Mutiny at Reinhart Field  in a battle for first place in the UWS East Division.  Surf Women (2-0-1 East) scored two goals early in each half in their 4-2 victory over the Mutiny (2-1 East) at SUNY Maritime.

New York has been heralded for their defense in their first two matches this season but it was their offense that came firing out of the gates. Midfielder Jordan Clark would put the Surf on the score board first in the 8th minute, blasting her header off a Flo Gamby corner kick off the cross bar and past New England goalkeeper Annie Ulliac (three saves). Five minutes later, forward Erica Murphy maneuvered through the Mutiny defense and beat Ulliac on her 1v1 opportunity for the 2-0 score.

New England would get a goal back before halftime through team captain and leading scorer Kate Howarth. Howarth notched her fifth goal of the season in the 29th minute as after a New York giveaway, she dodged around the defense and fired a low shot inside the far post for the 2-1 score. The Surf would notch two goals early in the second half to put the game out of reach.

After a cross from the right flank, forward Maegen Doyle would slot her shot inside the left post past Ulliac for the 3-1 score and the eventual game-winning goal. Five minutes later, Doyle would assist on a goal by Furtuna Velaj as her cross found the New York forward wide open on the left flank. Velaj would convert on her opportunity for the commanding 4-1 lead. Howarth would tally her sixth goal of the season for the Mutiny in the 74th minute on a penalty kick.

Shots on goal in the match were tied at 7-7 while Surf keeper Colleen Hickey made five saves. This was the first of two road games this weekend for New York.  New York will travel to face the Lancaster Inferno (1-2 East) this afternoon in eastern Pennsylvania, who the Mutiny defeated by a 3-2 score in Week II East action.
